Day or Night Products: Do They Matter?

Admit it. You thought there might as well have been some marketing fairy slapping labels on  “day” and “night” skin-care treatments. They seem arbitrary because a cream is a cream and skin is just skin — right? Why should it matter what time of day said cream is applied to said skin? Well, we are here to tell you that nothing could be further from the truth. It really matters what time of the day you apply topical treatments or exfoliate, for instance.

How does your skin know? We wanted the proof too. Circadian rhythms are important in determining the sleeping and feeding patterns of all animals, including human beings. There are clear patterns of brain wave activity, hormone production, cell regeneration and other biological activities linked to this daily cycle, according to a number of scientific studies. During the day our skin is in protective mode. So between noon and 5pm, when the sun is at its peak, your skin produces more sebum.  During the night, skin switches to “microcirculation” mode and gives off a lot of moisture in the process, to renew itself.

So what does this mean for your skin-care routine? It is important to apply products that are going to support what the skin is trying to do at that time: protecting or regenerating. That’s why our estheticians brought in a nighttime line from eminence to support these very important regenerating functions because here in the dry desert, it is harder for the skin to get the job done. Still, our estheticians have two basic rules that also apply to the day/night treatment breakdown:

-Do NOT exfoliate in the morning, as your skin needs barrier to protect itself from damage, so retinol and like products products that regenerate the skin should only be done at night

-Antioxidant vitamins like A and C do double duty: in the morning to help shield our skin from the sun and applied again at night to help fight any free radical damage and help encourage cell growth.
